November Produce Report from Howie's Market

The best fruit in November will be apples, pears, and cranberries. They will be readily available and high quality. Apples and pears are available all year round, but taste better when they are fresh in season.

Cranberries are the perfect example of seasonal eating. Unlike other produce that is imported out of season in order to be available to us all year round. There are still a few items that maintain their seasonality. Perhaps you notice that you can only find whole pomegranates in late autumn…cranberries are the same way. You will find fresh cranberries available in November through December and most likely not any other time. Tis the season to enjoy these tart little berries.

Fresh cranberries are firm, plump, and vibrantly colored. Dark berries are juicier, while light berries have more pectin (which makes them better for cranberry sauce). Cranberries have a tart flavor, which can compliment the sweetness of some foods.

There are many ways to enjoy cranberries in both baking and cooking. Cranberries can be baked in muffins, breads or pies, and cooked to make sauces or dips. They can also be made into juice. To find more recipes or use of cranberries, you can look it up online.

If you are not sure what seasonal produce is available, please ask one of our produce personnel, we would love to help you with all of your produce needs and answer any questions you might have!
