March Produce Report from Howie's Market

Asparagus is known for being green, but they also come in white and purple! A very good source of fiber, folate, and Vitamin A, C, E, and K, this veggie is a great one to add to meal. Try asparagus roasted in the oven, on the grill or mixed in with pasta salads, stir-fry with meats and more.

Artichokes are almost available year round, with peak season being March - June. When choosing artichokes, look for ones that feel heavy and firm with a healthy green color and tightly packed leaves. Avoid artichokes with brown or soft spots, or ones with a dark brown or black stem. Artichokes can be steamed, boiled, microwaved, grilled or baked.

Pineapples are available year round, peak season is March through July. This sweet fruit is full of Vitamin C, manganese, copper and folate! When picking a pineapple, make sure to give them a sniff. You should smell the sweet, distinctive smell of pineapple. Enjoy the in fruit salad, smoothie bowl, or as a pizza topping.

Strawberries are available now from our local grower. The quality is excellent with full flavor and they are very sweet. Strawberries are highly perishable and should be refrigerated in their original package in refrigerator for up to 3-5 days. Always wash your strawberries before you eat them. To get the fullest flavor, bring strawberries up to room temperature before eating.

Pixie tangerines are finally here, first pick of the season. They are very juicy and sweet. Make sure to pick some up while you’re in Howie’s Market.
