For Whiskey Wednesday, we celebrate with Manhattans!
There are many versions of the Manhattan, but our favorite is the ABC Kitchen Manhattan.
This is a traditional rye Manhattan with ingredients and portions so basic that, after mixing once or twice, you shouldn’t need to consult the recipe.
McKenzie rye whiskey by Fingerlakes Distilling in upstate NY combines the rye spice with sweeter flavors that come in part from aging the rye in sherry casks. Excellent in a Manhattan or as a sipping whiskey.
There are a lot of vermouths out there, but Carpano Antica is widely seen as the gold standard for Manhattans.
ABC used Fee Brothers Old Fashioned bitters which is slightly spicier and less bitter than traditional Angostura bitters. We sell both at Howie's!
Finally, we recommend Traverse City Whiskey Company Premium Cherries for the garnish.
Recipe:
1 1/2 oz. McKenzie Rye
3/4 oz. Carpano Antica
3 dashes Fee Brothers Old Fashioned Bitters
1 tsp brandied cherry syrup
3 brandied cherries for garnish
Combine ingredients in a glass shaker with ice. Stir for 30 seconds and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with cherries and enjoy.
